Hamas "fervor, zeal" partial acronym of ḥarakat al-muqāwma al-ʾislāmiyya "Islamic Resistance Movement"), is a Palestinian Islamist and nationalist movement consisting of a political branch and an armed branch, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades.

Hamas was founded in 1987 after the first intifada as a political and militant branch of the Palestinian Muslim Brotherhood to fight against the Israeli occupation. According to its founding Charter (1988) and the General and Political Principles that replaced it in 2017, Hamas defines itself as a resistance group founded to liberate Palestine from Israeli occupation.
